Why it is important to have Mobility Equipment Maintained

  • Having your equipment serviced ensures it is both electrically and mechanically sound, and working efficiently. 
  • If your Equipment is under warranty, extended warranty  or insured, it may be invalid if you don’t have your equipment serviced.
  • All safety systems are tested to ensure  your safety while using the equipment. 
  • Any underling problems can be detected and highlighted, before they become a major issue resulting in a breakdown.

Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER)

These Regulations, often abbreviated to PUWER, place duties on people and companies who own, operate or have control over work equipment. PUWER also places responsibilities on businesses and organisations whose employees use work equipment, whether owned by them or not.

PUWER requires that equipment provided for use at work is:

  • Suitable for the intended use
  • Safe for use, maintained in a safe condition and inspected to ensure it is correctly installed and does not subsequently deteriorate
  • Used only by people who have received adequate information, instruction and training

All care and nursing home staff use, operate or come into contact with mobility equipment, either supplied by the home or by clients.

These include Mobility scooters, Power chairs, Adjustable (rise & recline) chairs and beds, Wheelchairs, Rollators and Tri-walkers.

If your home has a fleet of wheelchairs for general use, they should be regularly maintained, and a service log (a certificate of servicing) kept as evidence for your CQC inspection.

Most Insurance companies have a clause whereby they may not pay out if the equipment has not been serviced.

Heath and Safety
If your company owns any of the above Mobility Equipment, then your company is responsible to insure the equipment is serviced and maintain, and to provide evidence that it has been carried out.

If you company is registered under the CQC assessment system, then your company is responsible to insure Mobility equipment in general use is serviced and maintained, and to provide evidence that this has been carried out.
